Rafaela Persson is a graduate of the Documentary Photography and Photojournalism program at the International Center of Photography in New York. She further holds an M.A. in Sociology with studies in human rights, international migration and ethnic relations from University of Lund, Sweden.

Rafaela mainly works on long term documentary projects where she spends extended periods of time with her subjects, striving to create social awareness. Her most recent long-term project is about drug addicted women and children in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Rafaela received two honorable mentions at the New York Photo festival 2009. Two honorable mentions in the 2009 International Photography Awards. One of RafaelaĆ­s photos was chosen for the boo "Best of Photography 2009", by the Photographer's Forum magazine's 29th Annual Spring Photography Competition. In April 2009 Rafaela was selected as one of the top 10 emerging European photographers and selected for a workshop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by the Asia Europe Foundation.

Her photos have been exhibited in Copenhagen, The international Center of Photography in New York, Babur Gardens, Kabul, Afghanistan, The Pingyao Photo Festival in China, National Art Gallery and Annex gallery in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and is currently in the ICIMOD traveling exhibition: Himalaya: Changing Landscapes.

Rafaelas clients include Swedish Committee for Afghanistan, National Film Board Canada, New York Times, DAI, Reach, Sydsvenskan, Mana, Sydasien and People magazine Sweden.
