Elaine Santana, a 29-year-old Brazilian photojournalist, who worked as a fashion and portrait photographer before her traveling through Brazil made her realize that she wanted to be more involved with work that was about exposing and hopefully helping to change social inequalities in her country.

She has photographed skate boarding lessons at the Juvenile Prisons in Sao Paulo for 6 weeks with the positive take on making mistakes, learning from them, "falling and getting up and moving on".

She, then, traveled through the Northeast region of her country - 9 states - portraying musicians working with the folk music that mixed African tradition with Portuguese culture.

In 2007, she moved to New York City after being accepted on the Documentary program at the International Center of Photography - ICP.

While at ICP, she worked on a series of portraits of mothers with their children because she was intrigued by the different cultures and backgrounds she saw in the City.

After ICP, Elaine decided to spend another year in NY, improving her skills. She interned at Atlantic Records, from the group Warner Music Group. She also assisted photographers Andrew Zaeh and Scott Schuman (the Sartorialist). She also worked on her own projects, mostly photographing Brazilian musicians and bands.

Elaine has been published in Modern Drummer, Rap News, Jornalirismo, Chicago Tribune, Shift Book, Atlantic Records 60th Anniversary book, and has had her work shown in Brazil, the United States, Germany, Italy and China.

She just moved back to Brazil to work on some interesting local photographic projects.
