ANDREA STAR REESE is currently at work on part II of her series, The Urban Cave: the dark side, further documenting chronic unsheltered men and women of New York City as a follow up to The Urban Cave: the other side.
Published credits: Visura Magazine, Alternatives Internationales, The Fader issues 57 and 59 and The Shift Book. Other photography work: Yayasan Lembaga, Bantuan, Hukum, Indonesia (Indonesia’s legal aid society), Amnesty International’s Make Some Noise and Terror campaigns and numerous dance companies.
Recently Ms. Reese was selected for inclusion in Regeneration2, Tomorrows Photographers Today under Musee de l’Elysee, Lausanne. Selections and individual photographs from The Urban Cave: the other side received Best Social Documentary and two Honorable Mentions from the 2009 New York Photo Awards, an Honorable Mention from Camera Club, New York, and was one of twenty finalists for the Magnum Expressions Award. In 2008 Reese participated in the XXI Barnstorm, the 2008 Eddie Adams Workshop, was chosen for 2008 “Les Visas de l”ANI” under the Asociation Nationale des iconographes, (ANI)/French national photo editors’ association and received a Judges Choice Award from American Society of Media Photographers.
In 2010 her work will be exhibited at as part of the traveling show Regeneration2 premièring at Musee de l’Elysee, Lausanne. A slide show selection from the series The Urban Cave: the other side will be projected in Sao Paulo, Brazil as part of “Cidade Galeria”. Past group exhibitions include le Bar Floreal, Paris as part of 2008 “Les Visas de l’ANI”, 2008 Pingyao International Photography Festival, China as part of “What We Saw” and for The International Center of Photography’s Education Gallery.
Currently in post-production on a series of film shorts for web titled INDONESIA: A Year on the Edge in 2002 Reese was one of six Independent filmmakers featured in Witness 9/11 for National Geographic, and appeared in The Day the Towers Fell for The History Channel. CNN, ABC, RAI TV and ABC News Magazine also used footage Reese shot during and immediately after 9/11. In 2002 and 2003 Ms. Reese was a project director for VOICES OF 9/11, an oral/video collection for here is ny: a democracy of photographs (now acquired by The New York Historical Society).
Past Film awards include Best of Festival at The Philadelphia International Film Festival, Best Feature Film at The Central Florida Film Festival among other recognitions.
Andrea Star Reese received her BFA and MFA from California Institute of the Arts school of Film/Video. In 2008 she graduated from the International Center of Photography’s Documentary Photography and Photojournalism program where she received The International Center of Photography’s Director’s Scholarship.
